Romania’s VIFOR Wind Farm Considers Battery Storage and Solar Expansion

BUZAU, Romania, October 2026 — Rezolv Energy is exploring plans to add large-scale battery energy storage and potentially solar power to its VI
FOR wind farm in Romania, as the country seeks to strengthen energy security and improve renewable energy integration.
The project’s first phase, with an installed capacity of 192 MW, was inaugurated in Buzău County on October 2, 2026. Once the second phase is completed in 2027, the wind farm is expected to reach a total capacity of 461 MW.
Battery Storage to Enhance Grid Flexibility
According to Reuters, Rezolv Energy is considering a large battery installation and the potential addition of solar panels to create a hybrid renewable energy project.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) could store surplus electricity during periods of high generation and release it when demand rises or renewable output declines. Combining wind, solar and storage could also improve the flexibility of renewable power generation.
However, the proposed storage and solar additions remain under consideration, and detailed capacity and implementation timelines have not yet been confirmed.
Romania Expands Renewable Energy Infrastructure
The VIFOR project comes as Romania continues to develop its renewable energy capacity and strengthen the resilience of its electricity system.
As variable renewable generation grows, storage and other flexible resources are becoming increasingly important for balancing supply and demand, managing fluctuations in electricity production and supporting grid stability.
For renewable energy developers, battery manufacturers and system integrators, the potential expansion of VIFOR highlights opportunities to integrate energy storage into large-scale wind and solar projects.
Outlook
If implemented, the proposed hybrid configuration could demonstrate how battery storage complements wind generation and potentially solar power within a single renewable energy project.
As Romania and other European markets expand renewable generation, the integration of storage may become an increasingly important consideration in project planning and electricity system development.
