SAMSUNG SDI has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea East-West Power Co., Ltd. to jointly develop and invest in global energy storage system (ESS) and renewable energy projects. The agreement marks a significant step in combining a leading Korean battery manufacturer with a public power generation company to address the growing global demand for ESS solutions.
The signing ceremony took place on February 6, 2026, at StarPlus Energy (SPE), a SAMSUNG SDI–Stellantis joint venture facility in Kokomo, Indiana, USA. Attendees included Heon Joon Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of SAMSUNG SDI Americas; Yun Jae Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of StarPlus Energy; Myung Ho Kwon, President and CEO of Korea East-West Power; and Yong Hyun Kim, Senior Managing Director of Business Developing Group at Korea East-West Power.
Under the MOU, the two companies will jointly develop domestic and international ESS and renewable energy projects, as well as explore new business models such as grid stabilization initiatives. They also plan to deepen collaboration across the energy sector, including implementing Management Service Provider (MSP) projects at SAMSUNG SDI’s Ulsan facility in Korea.
The partnership aims to expand business opportunities in the global energy market, strengthen supply chain resilience, and take a proactive approach to evolving energy demands. By integrating the infrastructure expertise of a public power company with advanced battery technology from the private sector, the companies hope to deliver tangible results in international ESS and renewable energy projects.
SAMSUNG SDI offers a comprehensive portfolio of ESS products, from battery cells and modules for backup power to its grid-scale SAMSUNG Battery Box (SBB). As the only non-Chinese manufacturer of prismatic batteries, the company is recognized for its high energy density, durability, and advanced safety features that prevent thermal propagation (No TP). The company has recently secured several large-scale supply agreements with major U.S. energy providers.
Korea East-West Power brings extensive experience in power plant construction and operations from projects in the United States, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia, and has pioneered Korea’s first power generation–linked ESS deployment alongside the operation of MSP centers.
“Through our collaboration with Korea East-West Power, we expect to strengthen our global competitiveness in the ESS and renewable energy sectors,” said Heon Joon Kim. “We will further solidify our position as a leading energy solutions provider.”
Myung Ho Kwon added, “By combining the infrastructure of a public power company with the advanced technology of a private partner, we can enhance global market competitiveness and deliver concrete business results.”
