SC Estate Builder Targets 5 GW Solar Portfolio Expansion Through Acquisitions and New Projects in Malaysia

Malaysian construction and property company SC Estate Builder Bhd is accelerating its renewable energy expansion strategy by exploring acquisitions of operational solar power plants and pursuing strategic joint ventures to strengthen its position in the country’s growing solar energy market.

The company is currently seeking opportunities to acquire existing solar assets as part of its plan to expand its renewable energy portfolio and establish a larger recurring income stream from solar power generation.

According to Alex Loh, Chairman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SC Estate Builder, the company is evaluating both mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and joint venture opportunities, alongside developing its own solar projects, in order to accelerate portfolio growth.

Loh stated that once additional solar power plants are secured, the company expects renewable energy generation to contribute a significantly larger share of future revenue, marking a strategic shift toward a more diversified and recurring income business model.

Currently, renewable energy remains a relatively small contributor to SC Estate Builder’s overall business, with the company’s building materials segment continuing to represent its largest earnings source.

Beyond acquisitions, SC Estate Builder is also actively developing its own large-scale solar project under Malaysia’s Large Scale Solar Five (LSS5) programme. The project is targeted to achieve commercial operation by 30 June 2027, further strengthening the company’s presence in the utility-scale solar sector.

The company is also preparing to participate in Malaysia’s upcoming LSS6 programme, indicating its intention to continue expanding its solar development pipeline and capture opportunities from the country’s ongoing renewable energy transition.

Looking ahead, SC Estate Builder has set ambitious renewable energy growth targets, aiming to build a solar portfolio with a total capacity of between 2 GW and 5 GW by 2030.

This expansion strategy aligns with Malaysia’s broader efforts to accelerate solar deployment and increase renewable energy penetration. According to government data, Malaysia’s installed solar capacity under major government-supported programmes reached 3,254.61 MW as of 30 April 2026, including capacity from the Net Energy Metering (NEM), Feed-in Tariff (FiT) and Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (ATAP) schemes.

The country continues to promote solar adoption among residential and commercial users, including through initiatives such as the RM150 million SuRIA Home programme, which provides eligible households with rebates of up to RM3,000 for rooftop solar installations.

At the utility-scale level, Malaysia’s Large Scale Solar (LSS) programme has also become a major driver of solar capacity growth, with approximately 2,237 MW of installed capacity under the scheme by the end of 2025, according to the International Energy Agency’s Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme.

Through acquisitions, partnerships and new project development, SC Estate Builder aims to transform its renewable energy business into a major growth engine while supporting Malaysia’s transition toward a cleaner and more diversified electricity system.
