Sembcorp Advances 300 MW Malaysia-Singapore Renewable Power Project with 2.2 GWp Floating Solar and 4.3 GWh BESS

Singapore-based energy company Sembcorp Industries has achieved a major milestone in advancing cross-border renewable energy cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia, after its wholly owned subsidiary Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd received conditional approval from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) for a 300 MW renewable electricity import project from Peninsular Malaysia to Singapore.

The project will be supported by one of Southeast Asia’s largest integrated renewable energy developments, combining approximately 2.2 GWp of floating solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity with up to 4.3 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity at the Linggiu Reservoir in Johor, Malaysia.
The large-scale renewable energy development is being jointly undertaken by Sembcorp, KPRJ Environment Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor, and Qua Energy, forming a strategic partnership to accelerate renewable energy deployment and strengthen regional electricity connectivity.
The project is expected to begin operations in 2029, marking an important step toward establishing a more interconnected regional renewable energy ecosystem between Malaysia and Singapore.
By integrating large-scale floating solar generation with advanced battery storage technology, the project aims to maximize renewable energy utilization while improving electricity supply flexibility. The combination of solar generation and energy storage will help manage renewable power intermittency, enhance grid stability and support more reliable renewable electricity delivery across borders.
The renewable power generated from the Linggiu Reservoir development is designed to support electricity demand in both Singapore and Malaysia. The project will utilize existing and planned subsea interconnection infrastructure to facilitate cross-border electricity transmission, strengthening regional power connectivity and enabling greater integration of renewable energy into the Southeast Asian electricity system.
Sembcorp highlighted that the project will help address rising electricity demand from rapidly expanding sectors, including data centres, artificial intelligence-related industries and other energy-intensive businesses. At the same time, the initiative will contribute to improved energy security and decarbonisation efforts through increased cross-border renewable electricity trade.
The development reflects the growing importance of regional renewable energy cooperation in Southeast Asia, where countries are increasingly exploring interconnected power systems to optimize renewable resources, improve energy resilience and support long-term decarbonisation targets.
Sembcorp and its partners will continue working with relevant authorities and stakeholders in both Singapore and Malaysia to advance detailed development studies and secure the necessary regulatory approvals required for project implementation.
Once completed, the project is expected to become a landmark renewable energy initiative in Southeast Asia, combining floating solar, battery storage and cross-border electricity trading to support the region’s transition toward a cleaner and more integrated energy future.
