Spanish renewables company Uriel Renovables has finalised the installation of 1 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and hydridised the arrays with its landfill gas plant in Seville province, creating the first solar-biogas combination in Spain’s Andalusia region.
The EUR-3-million (USD 3.2m) project is led by Uriel’s biogas subsidiary, Energia Sur de Europa, which has set out to add 3 MW of solar to its Montemarta Conica landfill gas production facility. The remaining 2 MW are expected to come online in the autumn of 2024, Uriel said.
The solar panels were installed on decommissioned landfills, making use of land that was once a waste disposal site. The power line that carried electricity from the biogas plant to the grid only served one purpose, but now the project enables better use of the grid’s capacity, according to Uriel.
The Montemarta Conica plant can generate 8 MW of energy, using urban solid waste as feedstock, Uriel says on its website.
The company expects the solar farm to be capable of producing 6,365 MWh of electricity per year, once all the second phase panels start operation.
