The French manufacturer of terracotta construction products and photovoltaic solutions joins the teams of the Austrian industrialist who hopes to diversify its offer in the renovation of sloping roofs and in solar energy.
The Austrian group specializing in sloping roofs and building envelopes Wienerberger has finalized the acquisition of the French tile-brick maker Terreal , a process started in December 2022. The latter has in its catalog photovoltaic solutions integrated into the building and superimposed and has 3,000 employees and 28 production sites. With this operation, Wienerberger therefore wants to strengthen its position in Europe (France, Italy, Spain) and in North America as a supplier of roofs, with or without photovoltaic panels, and of techniques for the entire building.
“The renovation and rehabilitation of the European building stock are essential levers to move towards climate neutrality, because old roofs represent around 30% of energy losses in the building sector,” explained Heimo Scheuch, CEO of the company. which has more than 200 production sites in 27 countries.
With the acquisition of Terreal, wienerberger will be able to integrate solar PV, rainwater and complementary solutions, including accessories and insulation materials, establishing a strong platform for future growth.” Especially since, according to an agreement between member states and the European Parliament signed in March 2023, each member country will be required to renovate at least 3% of the total surface area of its public buildings each year.
The amount of the transaction was not specified, but Wienerberger indicates that it is the largest in its history. Additional annual turnover is estimated at approximately €725 million and the combined pitched roof solutions business is expected to reach a total roofing area of approximately 75 million square meters per year. The operation also includes the German Creaton, designer of terracotta tiles, concrete tiles and roofing accessories that Terreal bought in October 2020.
