Solarium Green Energy Resumes Solar Module Production with Fully Automated 1 GW Facility in Gujarat

Solarium Green Energy is set to re-enter the solar module manufacturing sector with the launch of a fully automated 1 GW production facility in Ahmedabad, located in Gujarat, India.

Previously, the company operated a 100 MW polycrystalline module plant, which commenced in 2018. However, operations were halted following the enforcement of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) mandate under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), which stipulated a minimum module efficiency threshold of 19%.

The new facility, representing a capital investment of INR 700 million (approximately $8.2 million), along with working capital requirements, will be financed with a debt-to-equity ratio of 3:1. Commercial production is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025–26.

As part of its cost-optimization strategy, Solarium is pursuing backward integration. In engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects, solar modules account for roughly 50%–60% of the total cost. By bringing module production in-house, the company aims to reduce cost fluctuations, speed up project delivery, enhance supply chain security, and improve profit margins.

The upcoming facility will manufacture crystalline silicon solar modules utilizing advanced technologies including tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) cells, half-cut cells, and bifacial modules. High-precision equipment such as imported tabber-stringers, laminators, and sun simulators will be deployed to ensure superior quality and performance.

“We’re thrilled to rejoin the manufacturing space and believe this integration will create strong synergies within our supply chain,” said Ankit Garg, Chairman and Managing Director of Solarium.

“A solar plant comprises three essential components: modules, inverters, and mounting structures. With 85% plant utilization, we expect the new facility could generate more than INR 10 billion in annual revenue if modules are sold externally. When used for captive consumption, avoiding third-party margins, we project a 5%–8% increase in gross margins for our projects.”

Solarium is also venturing into the manufacturing of solar structures—one of the key components of a solar power plant—at its existing site in Bavla, Gujarat. This expansion will further strengthen its project execution capabilities and help compress project timelines. In line with this integrated strategy, Solarium recently partnered with WattPower Systems to distribute high-quality solar inverters across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The Ahmedabad plant will help reduce exposure to global supply chain disruptions, geopolitical risks, and price instability. Any excess capacity not used for in-house projects will be marketed to other EPC firms and B2B customers.
