South Africa witnessed a 349% growth in a little over a year in installed rooftop solar PV capacity.
The country’s rooftop solar PV capacity increased from 983MW in March 2022 to 4,412MW in June 2023, according to local reports.
It comes at a time when South Africa is actively encouraging the uptake of new rooftop solar with targeted policy. Rooftop solar has offered some relief to the locals who were facing load shedding since long time.
Meanwhile, the official data suggests that in the first quarter of 2023, South Africa imported five times as many batteries as compared to last year.
As per reports, the country has been struggling for energy transition in lack of capital available. Considering this, it also became the first country to be selected for a Just Energy Transition Partnership.
Following this, the country will receive $8.5bn (R161.21bn) from advanced economies to support the decarbonisation of the power sector.
