Southeast Asia Drives Growing Demand for Solar and Energy Storage

Southeast Asia is emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for renewable energy investment, driven by rapid industrialisation, urbanisation and the expansion of data centres across the region.
Countries including the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam are experiencing sustained growth in electricity demand as their economies expand. The increasing need for reliable and affordable power is accelerating investment in solar PV, energy storage and grid infrastructure.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Southeast Asia’s energy demand is expected to grow at a significantly faster pace than the global average. Renewable energy, electricity grids and battery storage are expected to play an increasingly important role in meeting the region’s rising electricity needs.
Solar deployment is also gaining momentum across individual markets. In the Philippines, solar module imports from China increased significantly in early 2026, reflecting stronger demand for solar projects as the country seeks to expand domestic renewable generation, improve energy security and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.
Meanwhile, Malaysia and Indonesia are also strengthening their renewable energy pipelines, supported by growing electricity demand from industrial facilities, commercial users and data centres. The development of large-scale solar projects is increasingly being complemented by battery energy storage as markets seek greater grid flexibility and more reliable renewable power.
The combination of solar PV, BESS and grid investment is expected to become increasingly important for Southeast Asia’s energy transition. As electricity demand continues to rise, the region’s ability to expand renewable generation while strengthening transmission and storage infrastructure will be critical to ensuring long-term energy security.
With strong economic growth and increasing demand for clean and reliable electricity, Southeast Asia is set to remain a key growth market for solar and energy storage investment over the coming years.
