Norwegian state-owned utility Statkraft AS has made the investment decision to proceed with the construction with a 47-MWp solar park with battery storage in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Dubbed Zerbst, the hybrid complex will be built by the end of 2025, Statkraft said on Thursday. According to its statement, this will be the largest hybrid solar-storage park in Germany.
To be located in the municipality of Zerbst, in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district of the east-central state, the contemplated park will be sited on a former gravel pit and will cover about 41 ha (101 acres) of land area. The photovoltaic (PV) array will be able to generate enough electricity to supply roughly 14,000 homes annually. It will be coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 16 MW, providing two hours of storage capacity.
Statkraft expects to secure building permit for the project this summer and launch construction activities immediately afterward. Meanwhile, it said it is assessing the potential expansion of its ongoing solar park plans to include battery storage.
Last June, Statkraft secured a market premium for the Zerbst project after being successful in an innovation tender held by the German Federal Network Agency.
