Sun City Resort, known for its commitment to sustainability, has taken its solar energy initiative to new heights—literally. With all available roof space at Sun Central now adorned with solar panels, the resort has set its sights on The Palace and Sun City Hotel, employing an unconventional approach by airlifting 1,193 panels onto their rooftops via helicopters.
This ambitious project marks a significant milestone in Sun City’s phased environmental strategy, aimed at reducing energy demand and consumption across its expansive property. Brett Hoppé, General Manager of Sun City, emphasized the project’s alignment with Sun International’s broader environmental commitment and sustainability goals.
“Sustainability isn’t a choice for us – it is the only way,” Hoppé affirmed. “Our solar expansion not only benefits our resort by cutting energy costs and reducing our carbon footprint but also supports our community and enhances the guest experience, particularly for international travelers concerned about their environmental impact.”
Since June of last year, Sun City has already saved approximately R3.1 million through its solar initiatives. The upcoming addition of 690 kWp from nearly 4,000 solar panels underscores the resort’s dedication to renewable energy solutions while preserving its architectural heritage.
