Estonia-based renewable energy developer Sunly has officially begun connection installations and preparatory steps for the construction of three major solar projects in Latvia, designed with a total capacity of 225 megawatts (MW). Each project has been developed as a hybrid energy park, integrating solar and wind power with a battery energy storage system (BESS) to enhance stability and efficiency, according to a recent company announcement.
The planned installations are spread across three sites: a 54-MW facility near Matisi village in Valmiera, a 90-MW plant in Dagda Parish in Kraslava Municipality, and an 81-MW solar farm close to Barkava village in the Madona region. Upon completion, these sites will generate sufficient renewable energy to power over 118,000 households annually, contributing significantly to Latvia’s clean energy landscape.
This expansion forms a key element of Sunly’s strategic vision for growth across the Baltic region and Poland. To support these ambitions, Sunly secured a €300 million (USD 326.4 million) investment from Rivage Investment and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, with Norway's largest pension fund, Kommunal Landspensjonskasse (KLP), also participating in the financing.
Sunly’s hybrid approach aligns with Latvia’s renewable energy goals, optimizing energy production through the integration of multiple clean energy sources and storage solutions. The three Latvian projects demonstrate Sunly’s commitment to building a sustainable and resilient energy network in the region.
