Germany’s Sunmaxx PVT has officially opened a 50-MW manufacturing plant for photovoltaic-thermal solar (PVT) modules near Dresden, calling for the creation of a functional ecosystem to keep Europe’s technological development.
The factory in Ottendorf-Okrilla is the largest production site for PVT modules globally, the Dresden-based company said on Tuesday at the inauguration ceremony which was attended by federal and state government officials.
Sunmaxx combines conventional PV with solar thermal technology to make modules that simultaneously provide electricity and heat. The company claims its product boasts strong performance with over 80% solar efficiency.
According to the German firm’s estimates, the new plant will manufacture 120,000 PVT modules annually. Manufacturing activities at the site were launched in December last year and the modules are already sold through the company’s partner network in Germany.
Given the strong demand for the PVT product, Sunnmaxx plans to boost its production capacity to up to 3 GW.
“Europe’s chance lies in innovation and the rapid scaling of next-generation technologies. The focus should therefore be on the development and support of technologies that can demonstrate an innovative edge and ensure regional value creation,” said Wilhelm Stein, CEO of Sunmaxx.
