Teesworks Ltd, the operator of the largest namesake industrial zone in the UK, has unveiled plans for the construction of an up to 100-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) together with Energy Optimisation Solutions (EOS).
The proposed facility will be installed within a three-acre plot at the Long Acres section of the 2,500-acre (1,012-ha) Teesworks site at a total cost of GBP 62 million (USD 78.4m/EUR 73.2m). Teesworks said on Monday that an agreement for the system’s construction has been reached with EOS. According to the statement, a planning permit application for the development is currently being finalised by the battery storage specialist.
It is expected that the battery’s construction will last about 12 months, opening over 100 jobs. Once in operation, the EOS facility will help offset about 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
“This latest agreement will further enhance Teesworks’ credentials as a leading UK centre for the transition to Net Zero,” said Teesworks’ chairman Chris Musgrave.
Teesworks Ltd is overseeing the development of the Teesworks site. At the end of May, it said the industrial complex will house a 1,000-MW/4,000-MWh BESS under a joint project with renewables developer NatPower SA
