Unigel launches large scale green hydrogen plant in Brazil

Latin American chemicals producer Unigel has started installation of a large scale green hydrogen plant in Brazil.

The company begun installing a $120m industrial-scale plant, which is regarded as the largest integrated green hydrogen and ammonia plant. The plant is located in the Camaçari Industrial Complex.

According to the company, the plant will start production in late 2023. Unigel will install three 20MW standard electrolysers in the first phase of the project.

The new plant will have an initial production capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen. Meanwhile, the company has a target to quadruple its production of green hydrogen, with around 40,000 tonnes annually.

Henri Slezynger, Founder of Unigel, was quoted in a statement, “Throughout our nearly 60-year history, we have always been attentive to technological innovations and have invested to meet industrial and agribusiness demands. With this project, Unigel takes the first step towards the decarbonisation of several sectors, contributing substantially to combating climate change on the planet."

It has been reported that the “products will be offered to customers who aim to decarbonise their production chains, such as the steel industry, oil refining, and e-fuels.”

The company said that Brazil not just has a huge potential in the generation of wind and solar energy, but also in green hydrogen.
