Vattenfall Secures 1.8 GW Danish Offshore Wind Portfolio Through Latest Tender

Swedish utility company Vattenfall has secured the rights to develop two major offshore wind projects in Denmark after winning the latest Danish offshore wind tender. The awarded projects, Hesselo and North Sea I Mid, have a combined planned capacity of at least 1.8 GW, further strengthening Vattenfall’s offshore wind portfolio in Northern Europe.

The two projects represent a significant expansion of Denmark’s offshore wind capacity and are expected to contribute to the country’s long-term renewable energy ambitions. According to the tender results, Vattenfall submitted the lowest bids for both projects, securing the development rights through a competitive auction process.

The Hesselo offshore wind project will have a minimum installed capacity of 800 MW and will be located in the Kattegat Sea, between Denmark and Sweden. Meanwhile, the North Sea I Mid project will have a minimum capacity of 1 GW and will be developed in the North Sea, approximately 20 km offshore from Hvide Sande. Both projects are expected to be completed by 2032.

Vattenfall secured the projects by offering competitive electricity prices during the auction. The company submitted a bid of DKK 504/MWh (approximately USD 77.6/EUR 67.4 per MWh) for North Sea I Mid and DKK 542/MWh for Hesselo. The Danish Energy Agency received two bids for North Sea I Mid and five bids for Hesselo, demonstrating continued investor interest in Denmark’s offshore wind sector.

Under the auction framework, the winning developer will receive the agreed electricity price for a period of 20 years following completion of the wind farms, providing long-term revenue visibility and investment certainty for the projects. The next stage of the process will involve signing the final contracts between Vattenfall and the Danish authorities.

The Danish government launched the tender covering three offshore wind projects in November 2025. The bidding deadline for Hesselo and North Sea I Mid was May 20, 2026, while the third project, with a minimum capacity of 1 GW, will remain open until October 2028. The latest tender followed a previous unsuccessful 3 GW offshore wind auction, after which Denmark adjusted its approach and introduced state support measures to attract greater market participation.

For Vattenfall, the successful tender builds upon its existing offshore wind presence in Denmark. The company currently operates five offshore wind farms in the country, generating approximately 6.5 TWh of electricity annually.

David Flood, Head of Business Unit Offshore at Vattenfall, said that winning both projects reflects the company’s continued ambition to expand its offshore wind portfolio and support the electrification of industry and society. He emphasized that offshore wind, together with other fossil-free energy sources, will play an important role in meeting Europe’s growing demand for clean electricity while maintaining affordability and long-term value.

The award highlights the continued importance of offshore wind development in Europe’s energy transition. With large-scale projects moving forward in Denmark and across Northern Europe, offshore wind is expected to remain a key technology for increasing renewable power generation, strengthening energy security, and supporting industrial decarbonization.
