Victoria has announced that renewable sources supplied more than 42% of the state’s electricity during the past financial year. This achievement means the state has already surpassed its legislated 40% renewable energy target set for the end of this year.
The government has set more ambitious goals, aiming for 65% renewable generation by 2030 and 95% by 2035. Currently, Victoria is home to over 90 large-scale clean energy projects, contributing nearly 7 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity to the power grid.
In addition, more than 50 GW of renewable energy projects are either planned or under development across the state. To speed up delivery, Victoria established the Development Facilitation Programme, which has so far attracted almost $5 billion in investment for 18 projects.
Once completed, these projects are expected to generate enough electricity to power about 574,000 households each year, while battery storage systems will provide evening peak demand capacity for close to one million homes.
