4 min read

On August 26, 2026, JDEnergy successfully hosted its overseas webinar, “Powering Malaysia with Utility-Scale & C&I Energy Storage.” The event brought together leading energy experts and industry representatives to explore the critical role of energy storage in Pakistan’s energy transition, as well as practical pathways for market entry and project deployment in 2026.

Topic: Malaysia's Energy Transition: Why Energy Storage Matters Now

Speaker: Ir. Justin Sim, President of Malaysian Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association (MPSEA)

The webinar opened with keynote speaker YM Tunku Akmaludin Zakri, President of the Malaysian Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association (MPSEA), who highlighted why energy storage has become increasingly important in Malaysia’s ongoing energy transition.

He emphasized the role of storage in supporting grid stability, strengthening energy security, and enabling greater integration of renewable energy.

Topic: Unlocking Value with C&I and Utility-Scale Energy Storage in Malaysia

Speaker: JDEnergy

Wolfgang Tang, System solution engineer of JDEnergy, introduced JDEnergy’s eBlock energy storage solution, highlighting its modular architecture, operational flexibility and lifecycle value. With independent PCS control for each eBlock, the system enables independent charging and discharging, eliminating DC-side circulating currents and supporting 100% depth of discharge (DoD) to maximize usable storage capacity.

He highlighted several performance advantages of the architecture, including zero parallel connection losses throughout the system lifecycle, AC-side conversion efficiency exceeding 90% under rated conditions, simplified deployment through modular and standardized design, and annual system availability of over 99%. The modular architecture also limits the impact of individual unit faults on overall system operation, helping maintain availability while simplifying construction and maintenance.

JDEnergy’s energy storage solutions have now been deployed across more than 10 countries, providing practical experience across diverse applications and operating environments. This growing global track record demonstrates the scalability and adaptability of its modular energy storage architecture in meeting evolving market and grid requirements.

Panel Discussion: What's Next for Malaysia's Energy Storage Market? Opportunities, Challenges and the Path to Scale

Panelists:

  • Jassen, Sales Director, Asia-Pacific in JDEnergy

  • Mohd Ali Ar Ridha Azlan, Founder, GC Renewable Energy

  • Kiran Jethwa, Managing Partner, fumase

  • JOHNSON LAM,GENERAL MANAGER at HASILWAN

  • Tawfique Roseli, Director of Business Development at Leader Energy

Jassen, APAC Sales Director at JDEnergy, addressed the long-term performance and economics of energy storage in Southeast Asia, where high temperatures and humidity place greater demands on thermal management, battery health and operational reliability. He highlighted JDEnergy’s liquid-cooling technology as a key enabler of improved temperature uniformity and battery performance. Jassen also emphasized that storage economics should be evaluated over the full 15-to-20-year lifecycle rather than by upfront system cost alone, taking into account efficiency, battery degradation, downtime, maintenance and augmentation requirements.

Complementing these lifecycle considerations, Jassen highlighted the role of JDEnergy’s self-developed eMind system in optimizing long-term asset performance. Using real-time data including load, tariffs, SOC and SOH, eMind dynamically adjusts system operation to improve energy management while continuously monitoring battery health. This integrated approach also supports predictive maintenance, helping improve operational efficiency and preserve the long-term value of energy storage assets.

Mohd Ali Ar Ridha Azlan, Founder of GC Renewable Energy, highlighted the technical and commercial complexities of Malaysia’s emerging C&I energy storage market. He noted that project economics vary significantly depending on individual load profiles, particularly for medium-voltage industrial customers where demand charges can be a major component of electricity costs. He also pointed to evolving fire safety and construction standards as key challenges, emphasizing the importance of learning from early pilot projects and developing practical experience to build greater confidence among developers, investors, and financial institutions.

Kiran Jethwa, Managing Partner at fumase, highlighted the gap between Malaysia’s emerging energy storage market and more mature markets such as Australia and the United States, where batteries can participate in established ancillary service markets. He noted that initiatives such as MyBEST and PRESS represent important steps toward integrating energy storage into renewable energy projects. Jethwa also emphasized that financing remains a key challenge, as banks continue to assess battery degradation and long-term performance risks, while solar-plus-storage projects could improve bankability and help optimize excess solar generation under Malaysia’s MAAQ export limitations.

JOHNSON LAM, General Manager at Hasilwan and moderator of the webinar, highlighted the gap between Malaysia’s ambitious energy transition policies and the practical challenges of turning policy frameworks into bankable, operational projects. He noted that the rapid growth of AI data centers and other power-intensive industries is increasing demand for highly reliable electricity, making energy storage increasingly important. Throughout the panel discussion, he guided speakers through key issues including grid integration, MyBEST and LSS6, financing, thermal management, lifecycle economics, local standards, system architecture, and future technology development.

Tawfique Roseli, Director of Business Development at Leader Energy, highlighted the role of energy storage in addressing solar intermittency and improving renewable energy utilization in Malaysia. By storing excess daytime solar generation and discharging it during evening demand peaks, battery storage can increase the effective solar capacity factor from around 18% to approximately 30–33%, while reducing curtailment and helping projects manage MAAQ export limitations. Looking ahead, he highlighted the potential of ancillary service markets, including frequency regulation, capacity and grid balancing services, as well as emerging technologies such as sodium-ion batteries, to support the long-term development of Malaysia’s energy storage market. Outlook

This webinar provided valuable insights into Malaysia’s rapidly evolving energy storage market and highlighted the key opportunities and challenges shaping its next stage of development. Speakers emphasized that energy storage will play an increasingly important role in integrating solar power, improving grid flexibility, addressing MAAQ export limitations, and meeting the growing demand for reliable electricity. At the same time, the development of clear standards, bankable business models, lifecycle cost evaluation, and advanced technologies will be critical to accelerating large-scale deployment.

Looking ahead, with supportive policies such as MyBEST and LSS6, continued market development, and growing demand from C&I and utility-scale applications, Malaysia is well positioned to unlock significant opportunities in energy storage. JDEnergy looks forward to working with local partners and industry stakeholders to support Malaysia’s energy transition and accelerate the deployment of safe, reliable, and cost-effective energy storage solutions.
