Pan-Asian renewables player Blueleaf Energy and its partner Universal Peak Sdn Bhd have been selected to install a 100-MW/400-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Malaysia.
The companies will build, own and operate the facility following an award by the Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga), Macquarie Asset Management’s Blueleaf said on Tuesday. The consortium has emerged among the winners in the Malaysia Battery Energy Storage System (MyBeST) tender programme completed in December 2025.
The proposed BESS will be installed to help strengthen Malaysia’s national grid and support the further adoption of renewable energy capacity. Its commissioning is scheduled for 2027.
The MyBeST scheme aims to facilitate the deployment of battery capacity that will provide frequency regulation, peak and energy shifting services and will help lower Malaysia’s reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants. The tender attracted 28 bids, of which only four were accepted. Each of the selected projects will add 100 MW/400 MWh of BESS capacity.
