The Ministry of Energy in Bulgaria has announced that by the application deadline of 5 December 2024, 151 proposals were submitted for the construction of renewable energy storage facilities under the RESTORE procedure.

The total value of the proposals reached nearly BGN 5 billion, with the grant fund amounting to BGN 1.154 billion.

The grant supports projects for the construction of electricity storage facilities from renewable sources, requiring a minimum capacity of 3000 MWh of usable energy, with connection to Bulgaria's transmission and distribution grids. The grants will cover up to 50% of eligible costs for each project, with the maximum grant per proposal being BGN 148.64 million.

Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov expressed satisfaction with the strong interest in these projects, highlighting their importance for increasing the share of renewable energy in Bulgaria’s energy mix, in line with the European Green Deal and carbon-neutral future goals. He also emphasized that the successful implementation of these battery storage projects would significantly enhance the region’s energy security.

The projects must be completed and commissioned by March 2026, with progress reviewed in May 2025.
