Changa Energy has successfully launched a 1MW solar power system at BT Industrial Group’s facility in Benoni, marking a key advancement in sustainable energy. Developed in partnership with BT Industrial Group, Nuvo Africa, and Candi Solar, this project addresses energy security concerns and the rising cost of electricity in South Africa.
With 1,604 solar panels and seven grid-type inverters, the plant will meet BT Industrial's energy needs while allowing the sale of surplus power back to the grid. This initiative is also a major step towards reducing carbon emissions and reliance on the national grid, aligning with South Africa’s clean energy targets.
Changa Energy CEO Mickey Mashale emphasized the significance of the project in fostering a sustainable future, while Kgomotso Lekola, founder of BT Industrial Group, highlighted how load shedding and increased electricity costs have strained their operations. The solar plant will reduce utility costs and ensure uninterrupted production.
BT Industrial Group has faced major challenges due to South Africa's ongoing energy crisis, with load shedding disrupting production and imposing financial burdens. The company’s energy demands average 600 kVA, with peaks reaching one megawatt, making a stable energy supply critical.
Founder and Managing Director Kgomotso Lekola emphasized the severe impact of rising electricity costs, which have grown by a compound annual rate of 19%. This increase has pushed their monthly electricity bill from R600,000 to R1 million, with further projections reaching R1.3 million. To counter these pressures, the new solar plant investment is crucial, ensuring uninterrupted operations while significantly reducing energy expenses.
The launch event, which included a tour of the facility, was attended by key stakeholders from Changa Energy, Nuvo Africa, Candi Solar, and BT Industrial Group. This solar project is seen as a key move by both companies to curb energy costs, stabilize supply, and contribute to South Africa’s renewable energy goals.
