Namibia's state-owned electricity provider, NamPower, has secured an agreement with Chinese companies to construct the country’s largest solar photovoltaic plant. The 100-megawatt Rosh Pinah facility will be developed by China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd and Zhejiang CHINT New Energy Development Co. Ltd. The project, with an estimated cost of 1.6 billion Namibian dollars ($89 million), aims to enhance Namibia's energy independence.
Funding for the plant will come from a loan provided by the German state-owned development bank KfW, covering approximately 80% of the total cost. NamPower will finance the remaining portion from its own resources.
Construction is expected to take around 18 months, with the plant projected to begin commercial operations by the second quarter of 2026. The new facility will increase Namibia’s current installed power capacity of about 500 megawatts, help stabilize future electricity tariffs, support economic growth, and advance environmental sustainability.
