Dutch Giga Storage to Construct 10-MW Home Battery

Dutch energy storage developer Giga Storage BV on Monday announced plans for a 10-MW/45-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the port area of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The construction of the four-hour facility, dubbed Giga Giraffe, is expected to be launched this summer. The system will be the same size as the company’s Giga Buffalo project in the Dutch province of Lelystad and the first four-hour battery in the Netherlands, according to the statement.

Giga Giraffe will be located in Westhavenweg, North Holland province, and will use the reserve capacity on the distribution network. Its commissioning is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

The project has a connection agreement in place with Dutch utility Liander, a municipal permit and a long-term lease agreement with the Port of Amsterdam. The required financing has been secured, as well.

The announcement for the new project comes a few days after Giga Storage secured approval for a 600-MW/2,400-MWh battery park in Belgium, which it aims to energise in 2028.
