Italian renewables developer GreenGo has secured authorisation for its 120-MW/480-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in San Sostene, Calabria.

The stand-alone storage system is one of the most significant currently authorised in Italy, the company said on Monday.
GreenGo has advanced the project into a fully approved asset in 18 months since acquisition, with authorisation awarded 13 months after application submission. The company now has 249.5 MW of authorised storage capacity. According to the announcement, this makes GreenGo one of the most competitive players in Italy ahead of the Energy Storage Capacity Procurement Mechanism (MACSE) auctions.
“With San Sostene, we are consolidating GreenGo’s presence in the storage sector, bringing the total of BESS projects already authorised to around 250 MWp and strengthening our ability to participate in the first round of MACSE,” said Fabio Amico, CTO and Partner at GreenGo.
Overall, GreenGo has a pipeline of 1.73 GW, including 75 projects in 12 Italian regions. Of this, 693 MW is already authorised, or ready to build, and 40 MW is under construction.
