India Must Install 50 GW of Solar Annually to Achieve 500 GW Clean Energy Target

India will need to deploy approximately 50 GW of solar capacity every year to achieve its long-term objective of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity, according to industry estimates highlighted during a recent renewable energy sector discussion.

The assessment underscores the scale of investment, infrastructure development, and policy support required as India continues pursuing one of the world’s most ambitious energy transition programs. Solar power is expected to play a central role in achieving the country’s clean energy goals, supported by growing domestic manufacturing capacity and increasing investor interest.

Industry stakeholders note that India has made significant progress in expanding renewable energy deployment over the past decade. However, annual installation rates will need to accelerate substantially to remain on track for future targets. This will require continued growth in utility-scale solar projects, rooftop installations, energy storage deployment, and grid infrastructure upgrades.

According to Pranav Mehta, Chairman of the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI), achieving the 500 GW target will require a sustained installation pace of around 50 GW per year. Mehta emphasized that policy stability, grid expansion, domestic manufacturing growth, and access to financing will all be critical factors in supporting this level of deployment.

The discussion comes as India continues implementing measures aimed at strengthening its renewable energy supply chain. Recent initiatives, including the expansion of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) requirements and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, are intended to encourage local manufacturing while supporting long-term energy security objectives.

Industry leaders also highlighted the increasing importance of battery energy storage systems, which are expected to play a key role in integrating larger volumes of renewable energy into the power grid. As solar and wind penetration rise, storage technologies will become essential for maintaining system reliability and flexibility.

India’s renewable energy ambitions are closely tied to broader economic and industrial development goals. Policymakers view clean energy expansion not only as a climate initiative but also as an opportunity to strengthen domestic manufacturing, attract investment, create jobs, and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

As deployment scales further, market participants believe that continued collaboration between government agencies, developers, manufacturers, investors, and grid operators will be necessary to ensure the country remains on track toward its long-term clean energy objectives.
