India’s Solar Module Shipments Hit 12.5GW in Q1 2025, Driven by Domestic Manufacturers

According to the latest data from energy consultancy JMK Research, India recorded solar module shipments totaling 12.5GW in the first quarter of 2025, with over half of the volume supplied by the country’s top five manufacturers.

Waaree led the market, shipping over 2GW during the period. It was followed by China’s Trina Solar, one of only two international manufacturers actively shipping to India in Q1 2025. Domestic manufacturers accounted for nearly 90% of total shipments in the quarter, underlining the country’s growing focus on local solar manufacturing.

In total, 24 manufacturers supplied modules in Q1 2025, while another four companies exported modules, with a combined capacity of 572MW. Notably, module export capacity from Indian manufacturers Adani and Waaree doubled quarter-on-quarter. The United States remained the primary export market, though JMK Research did not disclose exact shipment volumes.

New Capacity Announcements and ALMM Expansion

India’s domestic solar manufacturing landscape continued to expand, with nine local manufacturers announcing plans to add 17.8GW of annual module assembly capacity. Six of these announcements came from new market entrants, including GP Eco Solutions, which plans to establish a 5GW module assembly facility and a 2GW cell processing plant in Madhya Pradesh. The company is set to invest INR 10 billion (approx. USD 117 million) by the end of fiscal 2028.

Meanwhile, several manufacturers brought new production lines online in Q1 2025:

  • Tata Power launched 4.3GW of cell and module capacity in Tamil Nadu.

  • Avaada began 1.5GW of TOPCon module production in Uttar Pradesh.

  • Goldi Solar introduced an AI-driven production line in Gujarat.

  • Waaree commissioned a 5.4GW solar cell processing facility in Gujarat.

India’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) saw an addition of 11.8GW of certified capacity in Q1 2025, bringing the total approved capacity to 74.23GW across over 90 manufacturers. The top ten manufacturers listed under ALMM contributed nearly two-thirds of the total capacity.

Solar PV Installations Reach 7.8GW in Q1 2025

On the installation side, India added 7.8GW of new solar PV capacity in the first quarter of 2025. Of this, 5.93GW came from utility-scale projects, marking a 12.2% increase from the previous quarter.

This figure differs slightly from Mercom India Research’s earlier forecast, which projected Q1 2025 installations to slow to 6.7GW.

By the end of March 2025, India’s cumulative installed solar PV capacity reached 105.6GW, with an additional 70.9GW in the pipeline expected to be deployed over the next 4–5 years. Solar PV continues to dominate India’s renewable energy sector, accounting for 48% of total renewable capacity.

Looking ahead, JMK Research forecasts 11.9GW of new utility-scale solar capacity to be added in the coming months, and predicts 30.2GW of total new solar installations in fiscal year 2026 — including 21.1GW from utility-scale projects, 7GW from rooftop solar, and 2.05GW of off-grid solar capacity.
