The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security has authorized the construction of storage systems totaling more than 600 MW in the regions of Campania, Basilicata, Lazio, and Campania, with developments led by private companies and execution times ranging from 5 to 30 months.

The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has granted a single authorization to six stand-alone energy storage system projects, totaling 648 MW of capacity. The projects are located in the municipalities of Melfi, Sessa Aurunca, Tuscania, Bisaccia, Benevento, and Andria. These projects are being developed by private operators, within the framework of Legislative Decree 387/2003, and do not require an environmental impact assessment, as they are not included in Annexes II and II-bis of Legislative Decree 152/2006.
The largest system will be built by BESS BY ERRY S.r.l. in Melfi (Basilicata), with a capacity of 280 MW. The facility will comprise 448 storage containers, 56 conversion systems, 1,792 HVAC units, 10 auxiliary cabins, and a central monitoring building. The connection to the National Transmission Network (RTN) will be achieved via a 380 kV substation and underground cabling. The estimated construction schedule is 30 months.
In Sessa Aurunca (Campania), BESS Sessa Aurunca S.r.l. will develop a 120 MW facility with 392 containers and 49 2.75 MVA PCS systems. The system will be connected via 30 kV lines and 30/150 kV transformers, with underground cabling to TERNA’s “Garigliano” substation. The construction period is 18 months.
In Lazio, Sphera Vaya S.r.l. will install the 100 MW “Campo Villano” system in Tuscany, consisting of 32 modular units with batteries, inverters, SCADA infrastructure, and fire protection. The connection will be via a shared 30/150 kV substation with underground cabling to the RTN. The estimated project duration is 23 months.
In Bisaccia (Campania), Energy Total Capital BESS Bisaccia S.r.l. will build a 30 MW BESS, which will integrate 45 storage systems, nine inverters and transformers, and will be connected via 1,700 meters of overhead lines to the “Bisaccia-Deliceto” national station. This installation has a construction period of just five months.
In Benevento (Campania), Bess Benevento S.r.l. will build a 50 MW system consisting of 168 battery containers, 21 PCS, and a control building. The connections include a 30 kV cable and a 30/150 kV substation, with an antenna to the existing 380/150 kV TERNA station “Benevento 3.” The construction schedule is 12 months. “The construction duration will be approximately 12 months,” states the authorization issued by MASE.
Finally, in Andria (Puglia), Aclteck S.r.l. will develop a 68 MW BESS. The facility will include 146 battery containers and 38 PCS of 1.8 MW each. A 30/150 kV substation and a 150 kV underground cable will also be built, connecting to the “Andria 2” RTN station. According to the schedule presented, the project will be completed in 12 months.
