German renewable energy supplier LichtBlick SE and solar project developer Energisto eG have agreed to partner in the development of large-scale battery storage projects with the first permits for projects expected this year.

For the purpose, the two companies have set up a joint venture, called GigaCharge. The aim is the joint development of large-scale battery storage projects through to commissioning. Building permits for the first batteries with a capacity of up to 400 MWh are expected to be granted this year.

Through this partnership, the Hamburg-based power producer is diversifying its business areas and bolstering grid stability.

LichtBlick has been actively investing in the development of its own power generation facilities over the past few years and the first ground-mounted solar system was commissioned at the end of 2022. In 2023, it acquired project developer Eventus Wind GmbH, securing access to a 250-MW wind project portfolio. The company now has a project pipeline of up to 4,000 MW.
