KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — September 3, 2026 — Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation has officially launched the sixth iteration of its Large Scale Solar program (LSS6), making available a total allocation of 2,650 megawatts (2.65 GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity.
For the first time in the national program’s history, LSS6 mandates that all participating utility-scale solar projects must be paired with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The initiative is projected to catalyze between RM 13 billion and RM 15 billion (approximately USD 3.0 billion to 3.4 billion) in private sector investment while directly addressing grid stability challenges brought on by rapid renewable penetration.
Driven by surging power demand from expanding manufacturing hubs and new regional data centers—particularly across Johor and Peninsular Malaysia—LSS6 marks a structural shift toward dispatchable renewable generation. Projects awarded under the open competitive bidding mechanism will contribute to an estimated annual carbon reduction of 2.6 million metric tons and generate upwards of 15,000 local clean energy jobs during construction and operation.

"LSS6 represents a pivotal transition from expanding raw solar capacity to building a flexible, grid-ready clean energy ecosystem," stated Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation. "Integrating energy storage directly into project economics ensures our national grid remains resilient while supporting our 2050 net-zero emissions target."
The LSS6 procurement aligns with Malaysia's broader MyBeST (My Battery Energy Storage System) framework and national grid modernization efforts managed by state utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
