Malaysia | Solar + BESS is moving into residential energy
Malaysia’s energy transition is increasingly moving beyond utility-scale projects and commercial applications — battery energy storage is now finding its way into residential developments.
Sime Darby Property is integrating solar PV with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at its Elmina Ridge residential development in City of Elmina, Shah Alam.
The system is designed to increase household self-consumption, reduce reliance on the electricity grid and help residents achieve greater energy independence.

But perhaps the most interesting part is the developer’s approach to battery sourcing.
Sime Darby Property is testing the use of sorted and repackaged EV batteries for residential solar energy storage, with the potential to reduce BESS costs by around 40% while giving retired EV batteries a second-life application.
🔎 Why does this matter?
The development highlights an emerging pathway for Malaysia’s distributed energy market:
Solar PV → BESS → Self-consumption → EV battery second life
As solar adoption continues to expand, residential BESS could become an increasingly important part of Malaysia’s energy transition — not only by improving energy independence, but also by creating new opportunities for battery reuse, decentralized storage and smarter energy management.
The next stage of Malaysia’s solar market may therefore not only be about adding more generation capacity, but also about how that energy is stored and consumed at the household level.
