Manchester City Women’s Stadium Powers Up with nearly 3,000 Solar Panels

Manchester City Women’s Joie Stadium has made significant strides in its sustainability efforts with the installation of nearly 3,000 solar panels on its roof, positioning the venue as one of the largest solar panel sites in Manchester city centre.

This milestone is part of a broader initiative at the City Football Academy, where over 10,500 solar panels will be installed. Once completed, these panels will generate sufficient renewable energy to meet the annual power needs of the City Football Academy, reducing the club’s environmental footprint.

Pete Bradshaw, Manchester City’s Director of Sustainability, emphasized the importance of the Joie Stadium project as a critical step in the club’s journey toward achieving net carbon zero by 2030. He noted that transitioning to self-supplied renewable energy would ensure a continuous flow of clean power, greatly reducing the stadium’s environmental impact.

Bradshaw also described the installation as a significant achievement, positioning the Joie Stadium as one of the most sustainable stadiums in world football.

The solar panel installation will be completed in two phases. The first phase involves adding panels to the roofs of various facilities at the City Football Academy, including operational buildings like Studio 1, which is responsible for creating content for the club’s media channels. This phase is expected to be finished by the end of 2024.

Phase two will focus on installing thousands of ground-mounted panels across the training facility, with completion targeted for the 2024/25 season.

Once the installation is fully complete, the Joie Stadium will operate entirely on self-supplied renewable energy. Until then, the stadium and City Football Academy will be powered by 100% renewable energy under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Charlotte O’Neill, Managing Director of Manchester City Women, expressed pride in the club’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and improvement, with this project being a testament to that dedication.
