Nearly 18GW of Power Projects Enter Grid Impact Assessment in the Philippines
More than 17.8GW of power projects were endorsed for System Impact Studies (SIS) in the Philippines during the first half of 2026, reflecting the country’s expanding power generation and energy storage pipeline.
According to the Department of Energy, 137 projects received SIS endorsements between January and June. Battery energy storage systems accounted for 85 projects, representing more than half of the total.
The pipeline also includes 18 wind projects, 16 solar-plus-storage projects, eight hydropower projects, one waste-to-energy project and three biomass projects. A smaller number of conventional generation projects, including natural gas, diesel and coal, were also submitted for grid assessment.
The SIS process determines whether the national grid has sufficient capacity to accommodate new generation and identifies infrastructure upgrades that may be required, including transmission lines, transformers and substations.
The strong presence of BESS projects highlights the growing role of energy storage in supporting the Philippines’ renewable energy expansion. As more variable renewable generation is added to the system, storage can provide greater flexibility and help manage changes in electricity supply and demand.
At the same time, the scale of the project pipeline underscores the need for generation and transmission infrastructure to develop in parallel. The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines has emphasized that new generation must be properly coordinated with transmission development to avoid capacity becoming stranded because the network cannot accommodate or evacuate the power.

The latest SIS pipeline therefore points to a broader trend in the Philippine power market: the next phase of renewable energy growth will increasingly depend not only on new generation capacity, but also on BESS deployment and grid infrastructure upgrades.
