NSIA and North South Power partner for a 20 MW solar-hydro hybrid project in the state of Niger

The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), through its renewable energy subsidiary RIPLE, has teamed up with North South Power Company Limited (NSP) to initiate a groundbreaking 20MW solar-hydro hybrid project in Shiroro, Niger State.

This strategic collaboration underscores NSIA’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure and cleaner energy solutions in Nigeria, while also demonstrating NSP’s aspiration to lead renewable power generation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The joint venture signals a transformative phase in Nigeria’s energy sector.

The 20MW Pilot Project, nestled within a larger 300MW solar program, will be situated within NSP’s existing 600MW Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant concession area. The innovative approach involves integrating solar power with the existing hydro assets to bolster electricity generation and grid reliability. This hybrid system will enable solar panels to generate electricity during the day and dry seasons while conserving water for year-round hydroelectric generation.

The agreement reaffirms NSIA’s commitment to renewable energy for national development, following the commissioning of Nigeria’s largest grid-connected solar PV plant in Kano State in January 2023 and the launch of RIPLE in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Commenting on the partnership, NSIA’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Aminu Umar-Sadiq, emphasized the project’s role in expanding Nigeria’s clean energy portfolio, job creation, and socio-economic development.

Olubunmi Peters, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NSP, underscored NSP’s focus on renewable energy solutions and environmental responsibility, positioning the project as a driver of economic growth.

The signing ceremony, chaired by His Excellency, the Vice President of Nigeria, Sen. Kashim Shettima, GCON, saw the participation of the Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, and representatives from NSIA and NSP, among other dignitaries.

This collaboration echoes NSIA’s commitment to climate-focused initiatives, such as the Green Guarantee Company (GGC) and the joint venture with Vitol to establish Carbon Vista. It reinforces NSIA’s dedication to fostering a positive climate for economic advancement.
