NTT Anode Energy Corp, a subsidiary of NTT Inc (TYO:9432), has begun building an 18.2-MW/76.8-MWh grid-connected battery energy storage project on Japan’s Hokkaido Island.
The facility, named Tomakomai Power Storage Station, is scheduled for completion in 2028. Once operational, the lithium-ion battery system will be able to supply enough electricity to cover the daily consumption of around 6,700 average households.
The project is supported by subsidies from Japan’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy as part of its program to promote large-scale battery deployment.
NTT Anode said it intends to grow its battery storage business further, with goals that include providing reliable electricity for retailers and using storage to shift renewable output, enabling round-the-clock carbon-free power.
