In a groundbreaking development, OCP Group, a renowned global leader in plant nutrition and phosphate-based fertilizers, has partnered with Fortescue Energy, a subsidiary of Fortescue Ltd—a prominent player in green energy, metals, and technology—to establish a landmark Joint Venture (JV) in Morocco. This equal collaboration aims to spearhead the supply of green hydrogen, ammonia, and fertilizers to Morocco, Europe, and global markets, with a focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship.
As part of this strategic alliance, both companies, distinguished in their respective fields of iron ore and phosphate, have outlined ambitious plans for four pivotal projects in Morocco:
Large-scale integrated production facilities for green ammonia and green fertilizer, incorporating renewables, energy generation, electrolysis, ammonification, and fertilizer production.
Manufacturing of green technology and equipment to support renewable energy initiatives.
Establishment of an R&D and Technology Hub adjacent to Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) near Marrakech, dedicated to advancing research in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and minerals processing.
Collaboration on corporate venture capital funds to drive investment in key technological advancements.
The primary objective of this collaboration is to provide green hydrogen and ammonia as sources of renewable energy and raw materials for carbon-neutral fertilizers. These products aim to be accessible and affordable to farmers globally, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.
Mostafa Terrab, Chairman and CEO of OCP Group, expressed the significance of this partnership in advancing decarbonization efforts and delivering cutting-edge renewable energy solutions to combat climate change. Dr. Andrew Forrest AO, Fortescue Executive Chair and Founder, emphasized the creation of a globally competitive platform to support Morocco’s transition into a green energy production and manufacturing hub.
Mark Hutchinson, Fortescue Energy CEO, underscored the alignment of ambitions between OCP and Fortescue, highlighting the intent to establish Morocco as a leading integrated renewable energy, manufacturing, and technology enterprise.
The proposed projects will leverage the expertise of INNOVX, a multi-sectoral venture platform dedicated to building sustainable businesses and fostering emerging ecosystems with local impact.
This collaboration underscores OCP Group’s and Fortescue’s shared commitment to catalyzing Morocco’s emergence as a green energy production and manufacturing powerhouse, with far-reaching benefits for the nation’s long-term economic and environmental sustainability.
