Scatec ASA to supply battery energy storage project in South Africa


Scatec ASA has secured its role for a battery energy storage project in South Africa.

The renewable energy solutions provider has been awarded preferred bidder status for the project Mogobe (Ferrum). The project has a capacity of 103MW / 412MWh.

The company was awarded under the first bid window of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.

Scatec will be the EPC provider and provide operations & maintenance as well as asset management services for the project.

Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog was quoted in a statement, “Today’s award reaffirms our standing as a leading renewable energy player in South Africa. We applaud the South African government’s commitment and dedication to the battery storage procurement programme.”

The company views the project as a significant step for renewable energy transition in South Africa.

As per the authorities, the “award is part of the wider programme to procure 513MW of battery storage across five Eskom transmission substation in the Northern Cape province.”

Jan Fourie, EVP sub-Saharan Africa for Scatec remarked, “Once again, we have shown that dispatchable energy and grid infrastructure are cornerstones to the sustainability of South Africa’s current and future energy system.”
