According to data from Red Eléctrica España (REE), during 2023 the Balearic Islands grew by 92 MW of installed renewable power, the largest jump in its history. To a large extent, this growth is due to the 50 MW “Son Solomó” photovoltaic installation, located in Menorca.
In dialogue with Energía Estratégica España, Energy Consultant Pep Malagrava highlights that, despite the historic year that was 2023, the autonomous community needs to increase its installation rate.
“During 2022, the committee of experts on climate change of the Balearic Islands indicated that each year around 400 MW of photovoltaic power should be installed in the region,” explains the manager.
It is worth remembering that, according to the islands' climate change law, renewable energy is expected to reach 35% of consumption by 2030, and 100% by 2050.
“Therefore, the almost 100 MW installed in 2023, even without counting the self-consumption numbers, continue to leave us a little behind the speed necessary to meet these objectives,” says Malagrava.
In this sense, the executive points out that a significant implementation of renewable energies is expected for this year and 2025, because many projects are advanced in their processing and are ready to install.
“Between this year and next, at least 400 MW should be commissioned. Which brings us to a rate of 200 a year, plus what amounts to self-consumption, at a higher rate,” indicates the manager.
On the other hand, Pep Malagrava highlights that aid for renewable generation, excluding cases of specific installations, is no longer necessary in the Balearic Islands.
However, he warns that incentives should be aimed at the development of energy storage, since this technology will have an important role in non-peninsular systems.
“The Balearic Islands, which now have 320 MW installed, when they reach close to 600 MW we will be at a time when photovoltaic generation will exceed demand. At this point, storage will play a key role, because that renewable capacity is about a year away,” explains Malagrava.
It is worth remembering that, in mid-December, the final resolution of the aid program for hybridized renewable installations with storage in the Balearic Islands was published.
In this document, 15 photovoltaic projects were chosen for 49.625 MW of renewable power, for an aid amount of €28,053,016.56, and 53.50 MWh of storage will also be subsidized.
