The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) to jointly explore a comprehensive power development plan for the country, with a focus on modernizing existing infrastructure and integrating cleaner technologies.
Under the agreement, the two parties will assess the potential for upgrading existing power plants and evaluate new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facilities, including options for hydrogen co-firing and the scope of necessary modifications. The study will also involve advanced capacity planning utilizing state-of-the-art technologies.
The project, supported by funding from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), will run over the course of two years.
This collaboration aligns with Uzbekistan’s recently announced national energy strategy, which targets increasing the share of renewable energy in its power generation mix to over 54% by 2030. The country is seeking to rapidly expand its clean energy capacity while maintaining reliable and efficient conventional power generation.
As part of the initiative, the partners will also review the country’s current power infrastructure plans and identify appropriate countermeasures. These will include the introduction of new systems and the retrofitting of existing gas turbine units to support the large-scale integration of renewable energy and advance decarbonization efforts.
The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the agreement reflects Uzbekistan’s commitment to international cooperation and technology-driven solutions in pursuing a sustainable and resilient energy future.
