Zelestra and EDP Expand Solar-plus-Storage Partnership in Spain with 462 MWh of New Battery Capacity

Renewable energy developer Zelestra and energy company EDP have expanded their solar-plus-storage partnership in Spain through two new power purchase agreements (PPAs), adding approximately 462 MWh of battery energy storage to 181 MWdc of operational solar PV capacity.
The agreements cover the Pedroso and Valkyria solar plants. At Pedroso in Seville, a 25 MW/100 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) will be integrated with a 31 MWdc solar PV plant. At Valkyria in Castilla-La Mancha, a 90.45 MW/362 MWh battery system will complement 150 MWdc of solar capacity. Both battery systems are designed for four-hour operation.
Zelestra owns the projects, while EDP acts as the electricity offtaker. With these agreements, the companies’ Spanish hybrid portfolio reaches four projects with more than 1 GWh of contracted battery storage capacity.
The partnership builds on earlier agreements covering the Trujillo and Pizarroso projects, demonstrating a growing commercial model for adding batteries to existing solar facilities.
Retrofitting operational solar plants with storage can make use of existing generation assets and grid connections while allowing electricity to be shifted toward periods of stronger demand. This approach can help reduce the impact of variable solar output and improve the commercial flexibility of renewable generation.
The expansion also highlights the role of hybrid PPAs in supporting storage investment. By combining solar generation with battery capacity under long-term offtake arrangements, developers and energy buyers can create new opportunities to manage electricity supply and capture value from market flexibility.
As Spain continues to develop its renewable energy sector, solar-plus-storage projects are becoming an important option for improving the integration and commercial value of clean electricity.
