Australia | Solar Drives 2.6 GW of Clean Energy Projects to Financial Close in H1 2026

Australia recorded 2.6 GW of large-scale renewable energy projects reaching financial close in the first half of 2026, with solar accounting for 92% of the total capacity, according to the Clean Energy Council (CEC).
The figure represents a significant increase compared with the 2.3 GW recorded throughout 2025. Twelve projects reached financial close during the six-month period, including eleven solar PV or solar-hybrid projects.
Queensland and Western Australia emerged as key investment destinations. In Queensland, the Guthrie’s Gap and Smoky Creek solar projects each secured financial close with 300 MW of solar capacity and 300 MW / 1,200 MWh of co-located battery storage.
Battery deployment also accelerated. Nine utility-scale BESS projects totalling 2.3 GW / 7.1 GWh were commissioned during the first half, exceeding the 2 GW / 5.1 GWh installed throughout 2025.
Another 13 battery projects, representing 1.6 GW / 6.5 GWh, reached financial close. The CEC highlighted the growing role of batteries in shifting midday solar generation to evening peak demand.
The report also noted that Australia’s clean energy investment pipeline now includes 12.6 GW / 35 GWh of battery storage capacity at financial close or under construction.
