European Energy has energised the Kvosted solar-and-battery park in Denmark, turning an existing PV site into what the company says is Northern Europe’s largest co-located solar-plus-storage facility after adding a 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
The solar park has been operating since 2022, with the battery installed inside the same project area. European Energy said it completed the battery build in seven months, covering installation, electrical integration with both the PV plant and the grid, and associated infrastructure works.
With energisation complete, the project now moves into a commissioning phase, where the BESS components will be prepared for full commercial operation.
European Energy linked the project to a broader storage rollout. Mads Lykke Andersen, Head of Technology Development, said the energisation marks the start of large-scale implementation of another technology, with more utility-scale batteries expected to enter operation during 2026. The company’s Thorvald Spanggaard, EVP and Head of Project Development, added that European Energy expects to install more than 1 GW of battery capacity across its European markets by 2027, positioning storage to shift electricity use toward periods when supply and demand align more closely.
The company also pointed to Denmark’s growing need for flexibility: solar can cover over 60% of national electricity demand on high-irradiation days, increasing the value of storage for smoothing output swings and supporting grid stability.
Danske Commodities is the balance responsible party (BRP) for the Kvosted Solar Park and will also optimise the co-located Kvosted Battery Park. European Energy said this is the first co-located renewables-and-BESS asset in Danske Commodities’ portfolio.
