Italy’s Largest Agri-PV Solar Park been apporved in Sicily

European Energy has taken a final investment decision (FID) on a 225 MW agri-photovoltaic (agri-PV) project near Vizzini, Sicily, after securing a Contract for Difference (CfD) in Italy’s FERX auction—a step the company says provides long-term revenue visibility.

Authorised in 2023, the project is designed to pair utility-scale solar generation with ongoing agricultural activity, using elevated PV structures that enable continued farming and dual land use. Alessandro Migliorini, Director and Country Manager Italy at European Energy, said the development shows the company’s ability to deliver complex renewables in Italy’s evolving power market and demonstrates how agriculture can be maintained alongside large solar sites.

Once operational, the Vizzini development is expected to become Italy’s largest solar park, surpassing the scale of previous grid-connected installations and supporting Italy’s renewable energy goals and broader EU decarbonisation efforts. Thorvald Spanggaard, Executive Vice President and Head of Project Development at European Energy, said the investment reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Italy and its approach of combining clean power with local economic development while keeping agricultural use in place.

European Energy previously delivered the Troia solar park, connected in 2022, which was the country’s largest solar installation at the time. The Vizzini agri-PV project is targeted to enter operation by the end of 2027.
