Solar and Battery Storage Help Ease European Electricity Price Pressures

Europe’s electricity markets are facing renewed pressure from higher natural gas prices in 2026 amid supply uncertainties and geopolitical tensions. However, the rapid expansion of solar PV and battery energy storage is helping reduce the power sector’s exposure to expensive gas-fired generation.
Across the European Union, electricity prices in 2026 have remained significantly more resilient than during the 2022 energy crisis. The growing contribution of solar power has increased the availability of low-cost electricity during daylight hours, while battery storage has enabled more renewable energy to be shifted into periods of higher demand.
The combination of solar PV and battery storage is also helping reduce reliance on gas-fired power plants during peak periods. By storing surplus solar generation and releasing electricity when demand rises, batteries can improve system flexibility and limit the impact of volatile gas prices on wholesale electricity markets.
Europe’s battery storage market is expanding rapidly. The continent added approximately 36 GWh of new battery storage capacity in 2025, bringing total installed capacity above 100 GWh. Further growth is expected in 2026 as demand for grid flexibility and renewable integration continues to increase.
The trend highlights the growing importance of solar + BESS + flexible grids in Europe’s energy transition. As renewable penetration increases, energy storage and flexible grid infrastructure are expected to play a critical role in maintaining system stability, improving energy security and reducing exposure to fossil-fuel price volatility.
With continued investment in solar generation, battery storage and grid infrastructure, Europe is increasingly moving toward a more flexible and resilient power system while accelerating its transition to a lower-carbon electricity market.
