Sweden's Volvo Group Plans Large-Scale Battery Storage Facility

Swedish truck manufacturer Volvo Group plans to build a large-scale battery energy storage facility in Mariestad, western Sweden, as part of its broader efforts to develop and test new energy solutions.
The company said on September 10 that the project will include a future test bed for energy storage and other new energy technologies. The facility is expected to support Volvo Group’s ongoing electrification strategy and help the company explore how battery technologies can be integrated into industrial operations and energy systems.
The Mariestad project comes alongside Volvo Group’s wider investment in battery technologies. The company is also planning a large battery-cell production facility at the same location, with construction expected to begin in 2026–2027 and production targeted for after 2030. The planned plant is expected to produce up to 300,000 tonnes of batteries per year when fully operational.
Volvo’s growing focus on stationary energy storage also reflects the increasing importance of batteries beyond electric vehicles. Earlier this year, Volvo Energy delivered a 10 MW battery energy storage system to Volvo Trucks’ Tuve plant in Gothenburg, one of Sweden’s largest commercial and industrial BESS projects. The system is designed to strengthen the site’s power resilience and flexibility.
The latest investment highlights how industrial companies are increasingly looking at battery storage as part of their energy strategy, alongside electrification and renewable power. As European manufacturers face rising electricity demand and the need for more flexible energy systems, large-scale BESS could play a growing role in improving power resilience, managing energy consumption and supporting the transition toward fossil-free industrial operations.
