Thailand | Government Approves US$1.48 Billion Rooftop Solar Programme Targeting 5 GW

October 27, 2026 — Thailand’s cabinet has approved a THB 50 billion (approximately US$1.48 billion) rooftop solar programme aimed at accelerating residential solar adoption and reducing household energy costs.
Known as the People’s Solar programme, the initiative aims to support the installation of rooftop solar systems across one million households within a year. Under the scheme, eligible households are expected to receive subsidies of up to THB 50,000 (approximately US$1,480) per household through state-owned financial institutions. The programme targets a total of 5 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity.
Alongside the rooftop solar initiative, the cabinet has approved more than THB 20 billion (approximately US$600 million) for smart grid development. The investment is intended to support the integration of distributed solar generation and enable households to sell surplus electricity back to the grid.
Thailand currently relies heavily on natural gas for electricity generation, while renewable energy accounts for a relatively small share of its power mix. Expanding residential solar capacity could help reduce exposure to volatile fuel prices, diversify electricity supply and strengthen energy security.
The programme is expected to create opportunities across Thailand’s distributed energy market, including rooftop solar installation, financing, smart grid infrastructure and potentially solar-plus-storage solutions as the market develops.
