Thailand to Launch US$1.5 Billion Rooftop Solar Support Programme in October

BANGKOK, Thailand — September 9, 2026 — Thailand will launch a government programme worth 50 billion baht (approximately US$1.52 billion) in mid-October to support consumers installing rooftop solar systems, according to Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas.

The programme is designed to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar among consumers, supporting Thailand’s expansion of distributed renewable energy.

In addition to direct financial support, the Thai government plans to exempt taxes on certain imported solar panel components, which could help reduce equipment costs and improve the economics of rooftop solar installations.

The initiative represents a significant push by the Thai government to expand solar generation at the consumer level, complementing the country's broader renewable energy transition.

With substantial government funding combined with tax incentives for solar equipment, the programme is expected to strengthen demand for rooftop PV and distributed solar solutions when it begins in October.

The development also highlights the growing role of government-backed incentives in accelerating solar deployment across Southeast Asia, where rising electricity demand and the need for lower-cost, locally generated power are supporting continued investment in renewable energy.
