Indonesia Aims to Deepen Clean Energy Collaboration with Norway Companies

Indonesia is seeking to strengthen its cooperation with Norway in the development of clean energy, particularly in the field of hydropower, according to Foreign Minister Sugiono.

Following a courtesy visit from Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Rut Kruger Giverin, Minister Sugiono emphasized Norway’s leadership in clean energy, noting that the majority of the Scandinavian country’s electricity comes from hydropower.

He expressed Indonesia’s intention to learn from Norway’s experience in hydroelectric power plant (PLTA) development as part of its broader strategy to meet clean energy goals outlined in the 2025–2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).

The meeting also covered ongoing bilateral cooperation in addressing environmental issues and climate change, with a specific focus on marine waste management.

In addition to energy and environmental discussions, both sides explored opportunities to enhance trade and investment ties through a comprehensive economic partnership between Indonesia and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Norway is a member.

Indonesia and Norway established diplomatic relations on January 25, 1950, and this year marks the 75th anniversary of their bilateral partnership. To commemorate the milestone, the two countries have agreed to adopt a Joint Declaration on “Partnership for a Prosperous and Sustainable Future.” The declaration will guide the strategic direction of future cooperation in key areas such as the economy, trade, clean energy, food security, and education.

The RUPTL 2025–2030 is a critical roadmap for Indonesia’s electricity development over the next five years, primarily led by state-owned utility PLN. It outlines the country’s plans for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution to meet national demand and serves as a reference for private sector investment in the power sector.
