Sungrow and ERS Energy Reach 1 GWh Energy Storage Milestone Across Malaysia and the Philippines

Sungrow and ERS Energy have reached a combined 1 GWh of energy storage projects across Malaysia and the Philippines, marking a new milestone in their partnership and highlighting the growing role of battery energy storage in Southeast Asia’s energy transition.

The milestone was marked by a signing ceremony, with the two companies focusing on supporting changing grid requirements and the continued expansion of renewable energy across the region.

441 MWh MyBeST Project in Malaysia

In Malaysia, Sungrow and ERS Energy are collaborating on the 441 MWh, four-hour MyBeST project in Bahau, with ERS Energy serving as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

The project forms part of Malaysia’s national large-scale battery energy storage initiative led by the Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga).

As renewable generation expands, the BESS is expected to strengthen grid stability and help balance electricity supply and demand. By storing electricity during periods of high renewable output and dispatching it when required, the system can also support greater solar integration and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaking generation.

556 MWh BESS Project in the Philippines

In the Philippines, Sungrow and ERS Energy are working on a 556 MWh, four-hour battery energy storage project for ACEN, with ERS Energy again acting as the EPC contractor.

The project features grid-forming capability, enabling the battery system to provide active support for grid voltage and frequency.

It will also participate in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), allowing stored electricity to be dispatched according to market conditions. This operating model is designed to improve the utilisation of stored energy while supporting a more responsive and reliable power system.

Supporting Southeast Asia’s Energy Transition

Together, the two projects demonstrate how large-scale energy storage can address different market requirements across Southeast Asia.

In Malaysia, the focus is on grid flexibility, supply-demand balancing and renewable integration, while the Philippines project combines market participation with grid-forming capabilities.

Sungrow said it will continue working with regional partners to provide energy storage solutions that support renewable energy integration and improve power system resilience across Southeast Asia.
